Innovative and inclusive urban development at the Sint-Anna site in Sint-Truiden
Sint-Truiden, April 23, 2026– Today, the first symbolic cornerstone was laid at the historic Sint-Anna site in Sint-Truiden for Buur&Berg, an innovative urban renewal project that takes a fresh approach to housing, care, and community life. In the presence of Minister Beenders and Mayor Vandenhove, among others, the starting signal was given for a new, forward-looking urban neighborhood. On Saturday, May 9, the general public can learn about the project during our Buur&Berg open house.
“Buur&Berg is not a traditional real estate project, but the further development of a strong social vision. The neighborhood is based on the principle oflifelong living, where people can live independently throughout different stages of life, with support nearby when needed. Young and old, singles and families live together in a neighborhood that encourages social interaction and combats isolation,” says Wim Straetmans, Managing Director of Kairos, the developer of Buur&Berg.
The origins of Buur&Berg date back to 2013, when, at the initiative of the Flemish Chief Architect, an innovative approach to housing and care was developed.
That vision is taking shape today at a strategic location: within walking distance of the Grote Markt, adjacent to green spaces, and embedded in the urban fabric of Sint-Truiden.
The neighborhood features a diverse mix of housing options: from apartments and penthouses to shared housing and assisted living units, housing for people with intellectual disabilities, and a residential care center, complemented by commercial spaces and public amenities: a daycare center, a child and family center, a local service center, day workshops, and local shops ensure that living and daily life flow seamlessly into one another.
A key component of Buur&Berg is its close collaboration with local healthcare and social partners, including Sint-Trudo Hospital, the non-profit organization WIRIC, Integro’s Home Elisabeth assisted living facility, Ferm Home Care, and De Hummeltjes. They integrate care and support into the daily life of the neighborhood.
Architecturally, Buur&Berg builds on the site’s history. Where a monastery once stood, and later a hospital, an open and inclusive residential environment is now taking shape, offering a contemporary interpretation of the urban fabric of Sint-Truiden. The architecture places a strong emphasis on light, greenery, and privacy, featuring car-free zones, communal gardens, and gathering spaces. Ample underground parking is provided; above ground, soft mobility is given plenty of space.
Sustainability is a second key pillar. The neighborhood is being developed to be completely gas-free and utilizes geothermal energy (ground-source heat pumps) for heating and cooling, supplemented by rainwater harvesting and forward-thinking construction techniques. The site also required a well-thought-out technical approach, due in part to complex elevation differences and the need to maintain the natural groundwater level.
Preparatory work began in September 2025 and is proceeding according to schedule. The first units are scheduled for completion in the spring and summer of 2028. Sales are in full swing, confirming the strong public support for this project.
Buur&Berg is a neighborhood with a soul and a focus on the future. Anyone who wants to experience this story firsthand is welcome to join us for our open house on Saturday, May 9.For more information, visit www.buurenberg.com.
