New residential care center while existing residential care center remained in use

On the site of the current Sint-Anna residential care center, Interbuild built a new residential care center for Zorgbedrijf Antwerpen for some 180 residents (six living groups of some 30 residential units). An underground parking garage was also constructed with about 100 parking spaces for visitors and staff, and in a second phase a service center and about 110 service flats were built on the same site. Part of the existing residential care center was demolished for this purpose.

The new residential care center was built on the lawn next to the current residential care center. As construction progressed, part of the current residential care center was demolished: the current pond, bike shed and greenhouse will disappear, but the front of the current park, farmhouse and chapel were retained.

The rise of individual buildings creates passageways (street veins) between the buildings that promote the fordability of the area. As a counterpart to the street veins, residence spaces are provided in several places on the site. For example, the park garden has largely been preserved, a network of green and open spaces has been provided in front of the service flats, and a children's playground may be located near the nearby school. The current farmhouse has been preserved and converted into a daycare center in order to promote contact between different age groups.

The project was realized while the existing residential care center remained in full or partial use. This required special attention in terms of planning, general coordination and safety, so that accessibility and safety were continuously guaranteed, including for visitors, residents and suppliers.
