Innovative, sustainable, flexible office spaces in Leuven

The Flemish Administrative Center on Diestsestraat in Leuven provides housing for about 800 civil servants from 26 government departments. The workspaces are furnished according to the "Different Working" principle, which the Flemish government is gradually introducing in all its services. This is a combination of tele- and homeworking and innovative flexible office spaces. The office complex includes 23,000 square meters of gross surface area and 158 parking spaces. It provides for a 200-meter-long plinth building topped by a seventeen-story tower on the Vuurkruisenlaan side.

Great attention was paid to sustainability in the design. Additional insulation and energy-saving techniques lead to very low energy consumption. Also revolutionary is the system of energy recuperation through borehole energy storage, which stores heat in the summer to be available for heating in the winter. Free-cooling and daylight compensation are also used to further reduce energy consumption. Consequently, the VAC project meets the (maximum) 4-star rating in terms of sustainability. The project is the final piece in the development of the Leuven station area where Interbuild previously built the KBC office complex which was completed in early 2008 and houses, among other things, the Leuven City Council.
