Belgian-European pavilion with sustainable character as visiting place for 7 million people

From May to October 2010, the Shanghai World Expo took place. A total of 73 million people visited 240 pavilions of countries and organizations at Expo 2010 with the theme "Better City, Better Life."

The joint venture Realys Group - Interbuild won the competition for the design, realization, maintenance and dismantling of the Belgian-European pavilion, in collaboration with Conix Architects (architect), Jan Hoet Jr. and Manège de Mons (scenography), JNC International (landscape architect), 3E (energy consultant) and CJI (local contractor). The joint venture was also in charge of the execution of the scenography works for both the federal government and the regions and communities, as well as the design of the 'shop' and the business area and offices.

The pavilion also housed the European Union's exhibition space. The pavilion was designed around the structure of a neuron, as its main inspiration. The neuron evokes the artistic wealth of Belgium and Europe, as well as the scientific progress that contributes to the development, radiance and richness of our cultural and intellectual patrimony. The neuron, the "Brain Cell," also refers to the central position of Belgium in the heart of Europe, at the crossroads of Roman, Germanic and Anglo-Saxon culture. In contrast to the playful, organic and intriguing form of the 'Brain Cell', the envelope of the building refers to the pragmatic and sometimes too discreet character that is peculiar to Belgium.

The pavilion is built from a metal structure that is easy to build, dismantle and recycle, thus making it sustainable. The Belgian-European pavilion welcomed a total of 7 million people during Expo 2010 and was able to close its doors with a positive balance sheet.
