Residential project with particular focus on roof garden as additional outdoor space and meeting place for residents

Zuidertuin is a residential project, constructed above ground as an apartment building and connected to the adjacent Green Desk building through a common basement. The project is located in the extension of Kaai Nieuw Zuid.

The 6 floors above ground house 45 apartments, 4 maisonettes, 2 commercial spaces and 35 bicycle parking spaces. The 2 underground floors (only the part belonging to Zuidertuin) include 49 parking spaces, 120 bicycle racks, private storage rooms and technical rooms.

The building has continuous terraces in light-colored concrete all around on each above-ground floor. Per residential unit, the insulated building envelope makes an inward kink, where at the same point the terrace shows an outward kink. The insulated building envelope was executed in light beige natural stone and gray oiled wood exterior joinery. The terraces are finished with the same exterior joinery and a play of vertical and angled bar railings. A special attention is paid to the roof: this level is used here as a fifth facade, an additional outdoor space, a meeting place for the residents. Both the three stair cores and the three elevators make this roof garden accessible.

Zuidertuin is part of the 'Nieuw Zuid' project, a new neighborhood in the south of Antwerp. The project area is located between the Scheldt quays, Namenstraat, Jan van Gentstraat, Brusselstraat and the Ring Road.

For the entire "Nieuw Zuid" site, the city of Antwerp constructed an external heat network that provides heat to each building through the use of renewable
energy.
