New landmark for Antwerp skyline with new hospital for ZAS
On the Eilandje in Antwerp, along the Kempischdok and the Asiadok, BAM Interbuild has built a completely new hospital for ZAS (Ziekenhuis aan de stroom).
The project consists of two underground levels consisting of parking, an unloading and loading zone for hospital logistics, and a number of hospital functions such as the emergency department. On the ground floor is the healthcare boulevard with stores that is accessible to everyone and provides the link with the AP Hogeschool Campus Spoor Noord and the new square for the Kempischdok and Asia dock, among others, which is yet to be constructed. The superstructure consists of 19 floors housing the entire hospital, which will eventually replace the existing Stuivenberg Hospital.
The project is characterized by a high level of complexity in terms of technical installations, and also offers the necessary expansion possibilities for future developments. The striking architecture of the glass mosaic facades provides a strong image to the surroundings and makes this hospital a real landmark in the Antwerp skyline.
The implementation deadline posed a major challenge, especially since the substructure must be completed in time to allow the Brabo 2 project, from April 2017, to construct the new tramway in Antwerp above the hospital's underground parking lot. This new tramway will ensure perfect accessibility to the hospital by public transport in the future.
Since its completion in 2022, BAM fm has been responsible for the maintenance of this hospital. BAM fm will take on this task for the next 20 years. But not only the maintenance of the ZAS hospital is so with BAM fm, also the maintenance of streetcar line Brabo 2.
