This project, located on the Congress Column in the center of Brussels, consists of the demolition of an existing underground structure, and the construction of a new concrete structure that will act as a new high-voltage cabin for Elia.
In order to guarantee the strength of the existing retaining wall and floor slab, some 40 tension anchors had to be installed through the existing floor slab prior to the start of the demolition work. The demolition work could then begin.
The new and highly complex concrete structure was built with columns, beams, pre-castals and pre-walls, as well as TT girders for the upper floor slab.
Furthermore, a number of concrete can levels had to be built in the adjacent underground parking lot that would allow Elia to bring the heavy power cables inside the high-voltage cabin.
On top of this structure, the existing adjacent square layout was extended with natural stone to the street.
The tight deadline and very limited logistics at this construction site, as well as coordination with the works for Elia, posed further major challenges.
